PHED : 1st draft of research paper; abstract proposal

"This research paper will examine the roles of canals in Bangkok and how it influences local social life. Analyses will be constructed based upon how the community interacts with their canals and why the canal operates to them in such ways. The data will then become a valuable resource in the formulation of a systems design; a prototype to re-introduce the canal typology to the locals from the perspective of seeing ‘waterscapes’ as potential social spaces."

-- "If canals are currently seen as empty waterscapes or urban voids, what is needed to be done for such void to become a potential social space?" Phed 28/01/11

  1. I'm currently looking into case studies of the conditions by which other waterfront urban/suburban contexts are dealt with, in recent years, and what are the trends of implementation resulting from the social conditions that exist within certain sites. Albeit different site conditions, there are a lot of research that has been funded by the city of Phoenix,AZ. under the organization name 'canalscape'.

I've also found a grad-thesis "The Historic Canal System in Bangkok, Thailand: Guidelines for Reestablishing Public Space Functions" done by a Thai student from Virginia Tech.
Although focused on the recovery/re-establishment from the historical preservation perspective, a lot of mappings and data may become very useful to my research; especially the author's observations of the subtle typological variations of the canal cross sections, and the guidelines of how to deal with each waterfront conditions.

    will keep updating research status...
